Amazon helping to improve food accessibility in DC

This post is sponsored by Amazon but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I’ve been in the DC area for over a decade now, and it’s only recently after a conversation with my best friend that I learned a shocking truth! Over 75% of DC’s food deserts are located in Ward 7 and 8 where she grew up. Being in DC, I always saw grocery stores everywhere so I didn’t know this and felt really sad about it.

What is a food desert?

For those who may not know, a food desert is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food. So while there may be food choices around, these aren’t the types of food that folks should be eating on a regular basis to ensure a healthy body.

Knowing all of this, Amazon made the acceptance of SNAP benefits available online nationally so everyone can enjoy the ease and convenience of healthy groceries delivered to the home. But that’s not all— those using SNAP EBT can utilize Amazon Fresh to shop fresh produce and meats with no membership needed, and there are special savings across grocery brands. I’m talking DEALS!

Improving food access in Washington DC

My best friend told me that for the longest time there were only fast food restaurants, liquor stores and maybe one grocery store with limited selection. So those living in this area had to leave their neighborhood just to improve their access to food. Being that Ward 7 and 8 are the most poverty-stricken in DC, this wasn’t always achievable with lack of money for transportation.

Shopping for groceries on Amazon using SNAP EBT is easy! Head to amazon.com/snap and add in your SNAP EBT card information.

Most of you reading have been loyal members of my online community for years and you know how important it is for me to ensure that everyone has a fair chance. It really affected me to know there were places in DC where food access was so limited. While I have lived in several different DC neighborhoods I have always had grocery stores within a mile or two of me. I am still so disheartened that there are even food deserts anywhere.

But I do feel a bit better knowing Amazon is trying to bridge this gap. Please share this blog post and help spread the word about this important program. Everyone should know about it so they enjoy more food options and the convenience of home grocery delivery.
