Caring for Your Skin During the Winter Months

With these last 3 straight weeks of under 20 degree temperatures, I have been worried about my already dry skin and taking care of it. The only reptile scaly skin I want to see in my house has handles and can carry my essentials. Because skin and skincare is weighing heavy on my mind, I figured it must be plaguing others thoughts as well. So here are some tips for caring for your skin during the winter months.

Before I begin, I want to emphasize that I am not a dermatologist or health care professional (though Dove dermatologist Dr. Alicia Barba did offer me some great tips). I am just a girl with super dry skin trying to stay as moisturized as possible even when the dry air from home heating and the bitter wind from outside wants to wreak havoc on it. But let me mention that even with my whole body feeling absolutely cold, I still sweat in certain areas. Well I used to sweat. Now I just slightly perspire because for the last year, I have been using the Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant and loving the 48-hour odor and wetness protection.

And it really does keep me dry in my underarms. The added bonus is that the skin in that area also feels soft and supple. Underarm skin is uber sensitive, Dr. Barba says, and can easily get irritated with sweaters and winter fabrics and that’s where Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant works its hardest. It’s armed with moisturizers to keep that area has hydrated as possible.

But let’s keep to the topic at hand and chat about caring for all skin during the winter months with my favorite tips.

Elbows and knees ladies. Just because they may be hidden under layers of the most stylish of clothes does not mean that we should not be properly hydrating them. I get it, no one is going to see it so why use lotion on those areas? Answer- Ugh, because cold weather is not forever and sundress weather will be upon us! Think of this as being proactive instead of reactive.

If you follow my Instagram or saw my post a while ago about skincare, you know that I am being very strict about my bedtime routine. Not only am I trying to get more sleep but I am committing to washing my face every night, applying a retinol serum, and then moisturizing, just like Dr. Barba recommends. Being in my mid 30s, it’s a must to decrease collage breakdown. More collagen means less wrinkles. Less wrinkles means I can lie about my age a little longer 🙂

The third way that I care for my skin during the winter months is by putting up my intense exfoliating gloves and scrubs. Yes, removing dead skin helps with hydration but sloughing off in an extreme fashion can be extremely dehydrating. So I stick to using a washcloth to gently exfoliate. Then of course, I apply a solid moisturizer while my skin is still damp in order to lock in that moisture. Glowy skin is in, haven’t you heard?

Another way I care for my skin during the winter months involves the lip area. I always have a hydrating lip balm around and try my best NOT to lick my lips as that is dehydrating. My lip balm also needs to have sunscreen in it because just because you may not see the sun, its rays are still harmful to our skin.

As always, I want to hear from you all. What are some tips you can offer me for keeping my skin supple during the dryer months and also, who’s been using Dove Advanced Care? Visit Dove Advanced Care online here for more information.

Talk to me in the comment section and also ask any questions you may have. Dove is my go to and I’m happy to answer any questions!
