Ahh, the infamous D word. And no, please get your mind out of the gutter. We are not talking about the ‘D’. This blog post is all about my dreaded D word– Discipline or in this case my lack of discipline and what I am going to do to establish a routine.
I cannot remember a single time in my life where I stuck to a routine. My wake up times have fluctuated since I have had a memory. I don’t always stick to personal hygiene routines. My mood and emotions totally rule me. Even in high school, I did not wake up at the same time every day. My alarm may be set but I rarely abided my its ringing. Snoozing it a couple of times was probably the one routine I effortlessly committed to daily.
When Jermaine came into my life I was certain because of his military background that he was going to motivate and jumpstart me into having more discipline but nah, I think my bad ways rubbed off on him. Now with being home more, being a parent, and having several gigs, it is imperative for me establish a routine and this is where discipline training comes in.
In full transparency, I did not coin the term. I was watching Hayet Rida’s instagram and this is what she called it and I vibed with it. I know that setting really obnoxious goals will only have me quitting in 3 days so I am starting really easy and simple.
Enough of the background and let’s get into my discipline training and how I am going to establish and stick to routines.
Discipline, Establish Routine:
#1: Make my bed every day
Yup, that simple. No matter what, I will make my bed every single day. I don’t ever hop back into bed once I am up so making it isnt a way to detract myself from getting into it. Instead, I am choosing to make it every single day to help train my brain to be habitual with something. Plus making your bed automatically makes your room look less cluttered and messy and I find that aesthetics play a HUGE role in my productivity.
#2: Remove Makeup every single night
Even if I am dog tired and Teagan is fussy, I will remove my makeup every single evening. If it’s a makeup free day, I will still cleanse my face before going to sleep. A simple cleanse, tone, and moisturize will do. Here are a few of my current favorite products:
#3: Get dressed. Every day.
I mentioned before that aesthetics play a huge role in my productivity. If I look like a frump, I act like a potato. A couch potato to be exact. But when I at least put on a cute outfit, I have the pep in my step needed to tackle the day with positivity. So yes, even if I am lounging, I will lounge in something cute. No more ratty t-shirt and sweatpants.
#4: Create Content for 30 minutes daily
For most this is a chore but for me its self-care. Creating content rejuvenates me and brings me back to a time where I had the time and energy to do so prior to all my responsibilities. So I am going to carve out 30 minutes a day to create content. Even if it is editing half a video or 30 minutes to chat with you all on Instagram stories, I am going to do it. For me. For my sanity.
#5: Clean up after myself
Sheesh I sound like a pig and I promise I am not but I am terrible with fully cleaning up after myself. So what this means is that if I have recorded a video and changed outfits, I will pick up and hang everything I used before I get to the fun of editing. After eating, I will wash the dishes and place in washer. Every single night I will ensure that camera gear is in rightful place and my desk is neat and ready for the next day. This one is gonna be a doozy for me.
After spending time injentrospect, this is what I believe will work for me in the beginning. The goal is to start with simple tasks to retrain my brain and self to be ok with routines and commit to habits. Notice I did not state I was going to wake up at the same time daily because I know I am not ready for that yet. I am still figuring things out with Teagan and our life just is not there. Maybe after completing these for 30, 60 or 90 days, I will feel more confident to add more but for now, I just want to actually build confidence.
Even though I work hard and have alot of jobs, at the root of it all, I am lazy and I will not longer tolerate this within myself.
So this is my discipline training and how I plan to establish and re-introduce routine into my life.
