Fashion Week Review
NYFW has come and pretty much past and I have thoughts. I am pretty sure these will be very unpopular opinions but hey, when have I ever been anyone’s favorite anyway?
Being couch-ridden for most of it, I spent most of my time scrolling through social media and various websites looking for all the amazing street style. To my dismay, I was pretty disappointed in most of the style I saw. Yes, everyone followed the trends— combat boots, baggy suits, beige, and boiler suits were EVERYWHERE and I got some inspiration but I did not see a lot of thought behind most of the outfits. But again that is JUST my opinion and opinions are NOT facts.
The funniest thing was my husband. He is very much into fashion and after going to one fashion week, has become enamored with street style as well. He also follows a lot of my friends and likes to support them. Yup, he is just amazing that way. But he was shocked to not be wowed in general. No one’s outfit was bad by any means but for fashion week they just did not have us ready to screenshot and save for future inspiration ya know?
The other thing that had me a little disappointed was the lack of seeing women who looked like me in the major street style features. And when I say like me I do mean black and thick. Not just hourglass thick either and not just recognizable names. But thick thick. Thighs, arms, boobs, wide hips or narrow hips, cankles, ALL a THAT! We are not one shape and I want to see it ALL!
I wish more street style photographers and publications captured the best style regardless of skin color, popularity, size or shape. Let it just be about the FASHION and the STYLE. And let me tell you, women like Kelly Augustine and Kellie B SLAYED! Go ahead and follow the hashtag #FatAtFashionWeek to see more.
But even with the rise of more plus size stores and more inclusive fashion shows, the major publications and street style photographers that are hired just do not seem to get it STILL. They still showcase the huge following bloggers instead of trying to capture anyone with great style. After all its not “big blogger paparazzi” it is coined street style photographer for a reason. While trends are amazing to capture because what the trend forecast calls for is what people will see in the stores to buy, I was hoping to see a little more “oomph”. But again- my opinion and opinions are not facts.
Style Retraction
So…… I took a teeny break from typing when a notification popped up on my phone and I went to Instagram. I noticed that one of my favorite photographers, Taylor aka Mama Photog, just uploaded a new Instagram story. I’m browsing through her story and just in awe of not only her amazing photography but also of the STYLE she was able to capture. She found EVERYONE who killed it. Sincerely.
So, I’m slightly retracting my above statements after seeing her captures lol. Some of yall really DID that shit! You killed it. Murdered it and came through for us living vicariously!
My Fashion Week Style
So let’s get even more real for a second. I will never state my opinion about others without stopping to be introspective. My fashion week style has pretty much sucked every year I have gone. I always put so much pressure on myself and end up just being hella BLA!
past outfits
But I have always left New York ready to up my game for the streets of DC. Why? Because of the inspiration I would bring back with me. I am not one to follow trends closely and often times the things I enjoy wearing become a trend anyway like plaid, oversized blazers, leather everything etc… Except for biker shorts. Still not my thang. But others make it look so darn cute! Peep exhibit A and exhibit B.
This is probably why I always deem myself a personal style blogger over a fashion blogger. Yes, in my opinion, there is a difference. Fashion bloggers are there to sell and to be walking representations of the trend forecast. Some are also just really into fashion itself so they truly enjoy trying out the new season’s looks. Personal style bloggers are those who don’t care about the trends as much and only look to them as a potential base. They often wear what they like no matter if its in or not and you can always know their personality by their outfits.
But I could be dead ass wrong.
Do you think there is a difference between fashion bloggers and personal style bloggers? Also what were your thoughts on this New York Fashion Week’s street style? If I missed some great outfits, please tell me in the comments ASAP because I definitely want to see!
p.s. I started a Pinterest board full of just Black girls and Brown girl style inspiration. Its a good mix of all so do check it out when you need some inspiration!
Outfit Details
And again, this outfit is older so I do not have specific links but I have rounded up some similar items.
But for those who want to know: the dress is from Eloquii, the sandals from Just Fab, and the purse is the Ryder bag from Fossil. This hat is one of my new favorites and its SATIN lined. You can get it at this black owned shop.
Love how you pointed out the difference between a fashion blogger and personal style blogger! When I read the definition, I would say I’m the later. I love looking at trends and will incorporate some but I basically beat to my own drum and wear what I love! Speaking of NYFW, I saw a lot of cute looks and for me my favorite part of NYFW is watching everyone showing off their unique styles
