How Nicki Minaj Changed My Hair

Hair. Oh Hair. It has such power and honestly can make or break an outfit. As I get older, I definitely experiment more with hairstyles, wigs, and weaves but when I was younger I was extremely basic and well, boring. When I first moved to DC in 2009, I decided I wanted a change so I went to Pentagon City Mall, walked into Phillippe Suissa salon and asked for blunt bangs. The minute Marta cut them, I was in love with how they changed my face and made my cheekbones pop out. She then became my go-to for all hair needs for a good 2 years. Ahh I should go see her soon. Back to the bangs though. I had these for over a year until the day I was walking out of a club and a young man complimented me (well he thought it was complimenting me) on my Nicki Minaj look. That was the LAST of the bangs. Nothing at all against the rap artist (she is truly talented in my opinion) but I am Jennifer Jean-Pierre and I dont imitate anyone. At the time my hair was long and straight so it looked too much like the flamboyant hip hop star’s hair and I really just could not have it. I knew too many young women would emulate that style and I did not want to fall into a certain category. I began growing them out that very next day. No exaggerating. Clips, bobby pins, and headbands became my best friends. Every now and then though I do miss having some fringe but since I am transitioning from relaxer to natural, I truly do not want to cut my hair. Lo and behold Judy Time posted an AMAZING video about how to fake bangs without cutting your hair and I will certainly be faking fringe oh so very soon! Definitely check it out below and let me know if you ever thought about that before… (I guess I am just not that ingenious bc I never did)!
Also browse through some more pics of me with my bangs… sigh, the good old days of long healthy hair before the DC water seemed to devastate what I had going on…

From the looks of your more recent posts, you can definitely tell that your personal style has evolved! Congrats girlie!

Now to my hair story…lol I have a tendency to change my hair every 6 weeks! Nevertheless, I always choose hairstyles that represent my wardrobe but I have no limits. I’ve gone from shaved sides, to a bob to braids to shaved sides again. Initially I focused on what others thought I’d look good in but eventually I gained confidence and today, I’m proudly rocking shaved sides with box braids! I absolutely love it and it’s a style that’s here to stay 🙂

I love your hair story! I am the same… I always go with what others (well mostly my mom) think looks best and its always long and straight. While I love long hair, I have always been drawn to pixie cuts. I am gaining the courage right now to cut my hair short. I am only worried because I hate doing my hair and I always just throw it in a bun so what is going to happen with a short cut… I will actually have to do it! EEK!

Hahaha well short hair can be more maintenance but the best thing about it is that your hair always looks fresh! You know what they say, once you go short, you can’t go back 😉 Trust me, it’s addicting!
