Natural Hair and a DC/Baltimore Fashion Blogger

dc

I am about 7 inches deep on my road to natural hair. Hair has been and has not always been important to me. It was all dependent on my mood. I have always preferred it long because its what appeals to me but I am definitely drawn to short cuts on the right face. I have never felt as if I was the owner of the right face for that type of look. So I have kept it long. When I first got a relaxer, it was mid back, thick and gorgeous. As time went by it thinned out and broke off. I cannot fully blame the relaxer for it because I was not taking care or babying my hair. I assumed I could just wash and go. Use whatever products. Not wrap it and use every flat iron and curling wand on the planet daily. I have been abusing my hair. A little under a year ago I decided it was time for a change. I watched one lady on YouTube with beautiful long and thick natural hair and I thought to myself “why not try it”. So from then on I stopped using a relaxer to tame the curliness and decided to start transitioning. I have been using weaves for the last year to make it easier but this time around I decided to pop my cherry and leave the braid virginity world that I was accustomed to. I have never done braids or twists. In my younger years, I deemed it far too afro-centric for me. I love being black and I love my ethnicity but I was not the type to pump my fists in support of the homeland. I really thought braids were for those types of girls or the more urban chicks that never liked me because of the high pitch of my voice and my choice of words. I was all about J.Crew and not enough about Starter Jackets. Yes, Im bougie and I grew up in such a suburban Caucasian area. Looking back, its so dumb of me to ever think that but unfortunately that is my truth.I am saddened by it but at least I can be honest. The great thing is that Im happy to embrace whatever style I want and make it my own. Add my own personal touch to it. Back in the day, I couldn’t relate to having braids or twists so I stuck with killing my hair with a relaxer. Its a new look that I am getting used to but I honestly really love it. It took FOREVER  but I was prepared for it since 1) I have a big head and 2) I have super full and thick hair covering that big head. Many, many thanks to Vivi of Heart Print Style for manipulating and coaxing my hair into these beautiful twists.
You truly are a soldier and I appreciate you taking the time to do this for me.
