“I cannot believe how pretty I look” “OMG that dress was made for you” “All I want to do is twirl around” “Can you believe my hair looks SO shiny” “I dont have a date but I dont care because I look really good” “this is the best day of my life” “thank you, thank you, thank you so much for making me beautiful“…..
These were a few of the statements that I overheard on Tuesday from the mouths of some of the very deserving young ladies who were chosen to be a part of Discovery Communications “Say Yes to the Prom” event. As blogged about previously, this was a day for selected (based off academic excellence and other factors) high school females from Magruder High School in Rockville and KidsPeace to go prom dress shopping through racks of 800 donated dresses, get the full glamour treatment with hair, makeup and nails and also walk the red carpet like the princesses they are meant to be. Not only were the dresses spectacular but each young lady also received one on one time with fashion consultant, tv show host and hair guru extraordinaire Monte Durham from TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress:Atlanta. To top it all off, there were seamstresses on site to customize the fit and alter any dresses! I was in AWE of how quickly they worked while providing quality garments! I was truly lucky enough to be the exclusive blogger to cover the event and ASSIST Monte with selecting accessories for each lady. Huge thank you to Kate Schroeder for trusting my styling skills enough to invite me. I have no words to describe the moment when Monte turned to me and asked “What do you think of these earrings, I’d love your feedback”. I mean, its Monte for heavens sake… he knows his stuff so when he asks little old me for an opinion you cannot help but ride the fluffy Cloud labeled number 9, stutter just a little bit and then answer with all the confidence you can muster (lol). Although I was busy organizing, looking and picking out accessories, I managed to shoot a couple pictures and video snapshots of the whole event from beginning to end. It does not do the day justice but I hope it offers you a glimpse of the AMAZING job the Discovery Communications team did in providing a day to remember for these wonderful high school students. From the chandeliers, to the luxurious couches to the layout of the room to the carefully chosen clutches and jewelry, I know that I felt like I was in heaven so I can only imagine what thoughts were running through each of their minds.Thankfully I did manage to end the day without fully crying but I certainly teared up numerous times hearing these young ladies’ stories. They deserve this and so much more. I urge everyone to help empower, lift, and support our youth. This day has forever changed my life and I have Monte, the staff at Discovery Communications, and these deserving and beautiful young ladies from Magruder High School and KidsPeace to thank for it.
I wish them ALL the very best and I hope they have a Cinderella worthy time at their prom!
