The Invitation I did not get
Mom groups in small school communities are… a thing.
They don’t start dramatically. No one sends a formal invite. They just sort of happen. One conversation at drop-off turns into a routine. A routine turns into a group chat. And suddenly there’s a whole ecosystem you didn’t realize existed until you’re standing right next to it—but not in it.
In smaller schools, especially ones without much diversity, the lines feel clearer. People naturally gravitate toward what feels familiar. Same faces. Same rhythms. Same life stage. It’s not always intentional. It’s just human.
But when you’re not mirrored in those spaces, it can mess with your head. You start asking yourself quiet questions you thought you outgrew. Did I miss something? Did I do something? Am I doing this mom thing wrong?
And then you realize… maybe it’s not about you at all. Maybe it’s just a small system doing what small systems do.
That thought doesn’t fix everything—but it does loosen the grip.
